Photographing Terrorists: “A Movie-Plot Threat”

Posted by Matt on June 5th, 2008 filed in News, Outdoor Photography, Photographers Rights

Bruce Schneier, an expert in security and terrorist threats, has an interesting article in the Guardian today. In it he discusses why the recent global offensive against photographers on the grounds of preventing terrorism is, to paraphrase, a load of hog wash. Schneier cites that in very few of the major terrorist attacks to date, there is no evidence that the perpetrators used photos to scope out their site before they attacked. So by encouraging the public to be wary of anyone taking a photograph the authorities are causing undue panic, distress to innocent people and most likely distracting our watchful gaze from people who are actually doing terrorist type things (you know, things like buying a lot of fertilizer).
